Best HEPA Air Purifiers for Bedrooms and Living Rooms: Levoit Core 300S vs. Coway Airmega vs. Blueair Blue Pure 211+
Air purifiers are one of the few home gadgets where the specs genuinely matter. Clean air delivery rate, room size and filter cost decide whether the machine actually helps — or just hums in the corner.

Indoor air can be more polluted than the air outside, thanks to cooking fumes, dust, pet dander and pollen drifting in through windows. A true HEPA filter captures at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns, which is why it is the benchmark for home purifiers. But two machines with HEPA filters can perform very differently.
What matters is the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) relative to your room, how loud the machine is at the speed you actually need, and what you will spend on filters each year. We used these three criteria to compare three of the best-known models.

How we tested
Each purifier ran for several weeks in a bedroom and a living room. We compared noise at low, medium and high speeds, ran each unit after cooking and after vacuuming, evaluated app and sensor usability, and calculated annual filter costs from manufacturers’ replacement intervals.
CADR figures and rated room sizes are the manufacturers’ published numbers, which use standardised procedures; we did not conduct independent laboratory testing. Scores are weighted: 35% air-cleaning capability for the rated room, 20% noise, 20% running cost, 15% features and usability, 10% build quality.
Our reviews
Best overallCoway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty
Approx. $190–$250
- True HEPA + carbon filter
- CADR 233 CFM
- Auto mode with air quality indicator
- Washable pre-filter
The Mighty is the all-rounder that most households will be happiest with. Its auto mode reads the air and adjusts fan speed so you do not have to think about it, and the colour indicator makes air quality visible at a glance. At lower speeds it is quiet enough for a living room, and the compact tower design disappears next to furniture.
It also keeps ownership simple: a washable pre-filter catches the larger dust and hair, and a filter-change indicator tells you when replacements are due. There is no smartphone app, which some will miss, but the physical controls are simple and reliable.
What we liked
- Auto mode keeps air clean without fuss
- Good coverage for medium rooms
- Washable pre-filter reduces running costs
- Eco mode switches fan off when air is clean
What we didn’t
- No app or Wi-Fi
- Indicator light can be bright at night (can be dimmed)
- Replacement filters are an ongoing cost
Best for large roomsBlueair Blue Pure 211+
Approx. $250–$320
- HEPASilent filtration
- CADR 350 CFM
- 3 fan speeds
- Washable fabric pre-filter
The 211+ is built for big open spaces. Its high CADR cleans large rooms quickly, and the fabric pre-filter — available in several colours — lets it blend into living rooms better than many plain plastic towers. Setup is trivial: plug in and choose a speed.
The trade-off is control and price. It has no air quality sensor, so you set the speed yourself, and the unit is both the largest and most expensive of the three. For big rooms that need strong airflow, though, it is hard to beat.
What we liked
- Very high airflow for large rooms
- Simple operation
- Stylish washable fabric pre-filter
- Effective at low speeds in smaller rooms too
What we didn’t
- No sensor or app
- Most expensive of the three
- Highest speed is audible
Best for bedrooms & budgetsLevoit Core 300S
Approx. $100–$140
- 3-stage filtration
- CADR 141 CFM
- Wi-Fi and app control
- Quiet sleep mode
The Core 300S is the easy recommendation for bedrooms, home offices and anyone buying their first air purifier. It is compact, genuinely quiet in sleep mode and includes smart features — an app, scheduling and voice assistant compatibility — that purifiers at this price rarely offer.
Capacity is its limit. In a room larger than roughly 200 square feet it works noticeably harder, and filters are best bought in multi-packs to keep costs down. For small to medium spaces, it is the strongest value we tested.
What we liked
- Excellent price for the features
- Very quiet sleep mode
- App control and scheduling
- Compact — fits on a nightstand or desk
What we didn’t
- Not suited to large rooms
- Filters add up unless bought in packs
- App is useful but not essential
What to look for when buying
- Match the CADR to the room. As a rule of thumb, look for a CADR of at least two-thirds of your room’s floor area in square feet.
- Look for true HEPA. Terms like “HEPA-type” or “HEPA-style” are not the same as true HEPA. Check the filter specification.
- Count the noise. A machine you switch off because it is annoying cleans nothing. Check decibel levels at the speeds you will really use.
- Budget for filters. Replacement HEPA and carbon filters are a recurring cost. Compare the yearly price before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
Do air purifiers really help with allergies?
A properly sized HEPA purifier can reduce airborne allergens such as pollen, dust and pet dander, which many people find helpful. It works best alongside regular cleaning and is not a medical treatment.
Should I run it all day?
Most people do — modern units are efficient and designed for continuous use. Use auto or eco mode to save energy.
Do ionizers or ozone features matter?
We would avoid ozone-producing purifiers. A mechanical HEPA filter does the job without generating ozone.
The bottom line
Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty is our top recommendation for most people — but the best choice depends on your space, your habits and your budget. Use the table above to match the product to your situation, and always check current pricing before buying, as deals change frequently.
